A billionaire businessman and political donor has been named as a suspected “puppeteer” involved in a plot to fund candidates in the federal election.
Labor Senator Kimberley Kitching used parliamentary privilege to identify Chinese-Australian property developer Chau Chak Wing as the person believed to be behind the foiled plot.
ASIO Director General Mike Burgess declined to make any confirmation.
The Australian Federal Police also warned Senate Estimates foreign interference through “disinformation” campaigns could risk the integrity of the upcoming election.
Australian Federal Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw says multicultural communities are most at risk of being targeted.
